So, you’ve decided to do a draft order lottery, but you don’t want to use our generator. What are some other fun ideas for completely randomizing your league’s draft order?
The process of determining who gets the coveted first pick should be an event in itself. A mix of suspense, silliness, and pure, ridiculous fun!
Whether you prefer games of skill, pure luck, or just watching a computer program simulate chaos, we’ve compiled a list of some out-of-the-box, laugh-out-loud ways to set your league’s draft order and kick off your season the right way.
- WWE Royal Rumble: Gather the dudes together for a watch party. Randomly assign wrestlers to each owner. The order of elimination determines your draft order.
- Balloon Pop: Blow up 12 balloons, or one for however many teams are in your league. Stick a numbered piece of paper in each one. Randomly choose owners (or have a kid do it) to go pop a balloon and find out their pick.
- Super Bowl Commercials: Each owner lays claim to a specific business or product. Gather for the Super Bowl. The draft order will be determined by the order of commercials aired after kickoff.
- Rubber Ducky Draw: Just like the old carnival game! Float some rubber duckies in a tub, each with a number on the bottom, and draw for your draft slot.
- Rubber Ducky Race: (What’s the fixation with rubber duckies?) Each owner pick a rubber ducky and race them down a track of water.
- Dart Throws: Prior to doing this, have a neutral, non-participant write down a random pairing of numbers on the board to a draft slot. Without knowing which number corresponds to which pick, owners throw a dart and find out their slots. Ties can have a throw-off.
- Charity Fundraiser: Why not do some good while setting a draft order? Team up with a local charity that collects money outside businesses. The draft order will be determined by who brings in the most money for his cause.
- Pin the Tail: Have some good ol’ fashioned childhood fun. Paste little cutouts of draft slots on the wall. Blindfold and spin each owner. Let ’em go try to tape their “tail” on a draft slot.
- Horse Racing: Gather together for the Kentucky Derby, or make a day of it at the track. Owners bid on their horses. You can assign draft order by horse finish for one race, or most wins over a set of races.
- Playlist Shuffle: Each owner picks a song that he absolutely hates. You make an online playlist of them all and hit “shuffle.” Imagine the irony of celebrating your hated song when you hear it!
- Beer Pong: Set up Solo cups with a draft slot written on a piece of paper in each one. Randomize the position of them so no one knows what’s what. Take turns tossing the ping pong ball to find out your slot.
- Draw Straws: Everyone knows the “draw straws” method of determining an unpleasant duty. Take 12 straws, each of a different length (or with numbers written on them). Pick to find out your draft order.
- Five Card Draw: Drawing cards for draft order is boring. Why not make it — eh, less boring — by each person drawing 5 cards? If you have more than 10 teams, you’ll need a second deck. Add up the total “points” from your five cards to determine draft order.
- Yahtzee Roll: Each owner gets one turn — not a full Yahtzee game; just one turn. Try to get the best possible score. Do you risk going for that Yahtzee? Go for a straight or full house? Or just go for that high chance? Set the draft order by most points to least.
- Slot Machine: Here’s a little fun and a night out with the boys. Each owner willl take $20 to a casino and put it into a slot machine. All owners must play at least three turns before deciding to cash out. You cannot add any more money than the original amount. But you can play as long as you still have money on the original ticket. The draft order is determined by most money after all owners officially declare they’re done. For extra incentive, the winner gets not only the first pick in the draft, but all the machine winnings, too.
